Leo Varadkar (Irish pronunciation: [ˈlʲoː ˈvˠaɾˠəd ˠkəɾˠ]; born 18 January 1979) is an Irish Fine Gael politician and the current Taoiseach. Following the retirement of Enda Kenny, he was elected as Leader of the Fine Gael Party on 2 June 2017. On 14 June, he was nominated as Taoiseach by Dáil Éireann and this nomination was approved by the President of Ireland. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency since 2007. He held the ministries of Transport, Tourism and Sport (2011 to 2014), Health (2014 to 2016), and Social Protection (2016 to date). During the 2015 Same-Sex Marriage referendum he became the first openly gay Irish government minister, , and is the first minister of Indian heritage.

Fine Gael is currently the governing and largest party in Ireland in terms of members of the and Irish members of European Parliament. The party has a membership of 18,000, and is the senior partner governing in a minority coalitionwith several independent politicians, with party leader Leo Varadkar serving as . Varadkar succeeded Enda Kenny as party leader on 2 June 2017 and as Taoiseach on 14 June; Kenny had been leader since 2002, and Taoiseach since 2011. 
The Taoiseach (, -shəkh, pl.Taoisigh , -shee; Irish pronunciation: ) is the head of government or prime minister of Ireland. The Taoiseach is appointed by the President upon the nomination of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (parliament), and must, in order to remain in office, retain the support of a majority in the Dáil.[note 2]
